Safeguarding Children: Training Overview
Why do I need Safeguarding Children Training?
In order to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people all those working with children (and with adults who are parents/carers), and their managers, must have the knowledge and skills to carry out their roles and responsibilities. This includes being able to recognise and raise safeguarding concerns. You must also be able to work effectively with others within your own agencies and across organisational boundaries.
What training is available to me?
The Luton Safeguarding Children Board (LSCB) has approved a programme of Training designed to provide opportunities for practitioners & managers working with children and families to learn how to safeguard children and promote their welfare. Some of these courses will be provided by your own agency and some by the LSCB.
What course do I need to do first?
You need to complete a Level 1, Foundation course first: If you have not undertaken any safeguarding children training in the past, or have not updated for over 3 years, you will need to do a level 1 foundation course. This will usually be provided by your own agency and you will need to make contact with your agency safeguarding children training lead. To find out who this is and how to contact them click here.
How long is the Level 1 course?
The length of the course you attend will depend on what agency you work for and what your role and responsibility is in relation to safeguarding children and child protection. Most jobs have been given a grouping from A to E. To find out what group your job belongs to, and therefore what length of course you will need to attend, click here.
What do I do after level 1?
Once you have completed a Level 1 course, you can access the Multi Agency Training provided by the LSCB Click here.
All the training you will find in the LSCB brochure is intended to support those working at different levels of responsibility for safeguarding children and to build on or consolidate your knowledge of child maltreatment and child protection processes and procedures.
Crucially it aims to achieve:
- A shared understanding of roles and responsibilities
- Improved communication between professionals and others working with children, young people and families
- Improved effective Working Together based on sound working relationships
- Improved decision- making.
